Bus Trips

Frank Lloyd Wright Architectural Tour
Mason City, Iowa

We invite you to join us on this one-day bus trip to Mason City, featuring an Architectural Tour highlighting the vast architectural heritage in the community. We begin our quest to learn more about Frank Lloyd Wright while touring the Stockman House, the first and only Prairie School house designed in Iowa by Wright.

Next, we will tour the Historic Park Inn Hotel, the last remaining hotel in the world designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Explore the restored public places of the hotel on a guided tour of the facility. Visit the mezzanine balcony overlooking the lobby and dining room, the Skylight Room with its fully restored sky-lit art glass ceiling, the Ladies Parlor with art-glass French Doors, the Gentlemen’s Lounge and the Billiards Room.  Following this event, we will enjoy a catered lunch at the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum. Here, we will also learn more about Mason City’s unique architectural treasures, as well as a permanent collection of American art, including works by Regionalists Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood. The museum also features the largest collection of works by renowned puppeteer and Mason City native, Bill Baird, including his most famous puppets from the movie, The Sound of Music

After lunch, we will enjoy a walking tour (approximately 1 mile) of the Rock Crest-Rock Glen Historic District—the largest group of Prairie School style homes on a unified site.

Before departing for home, we will swing by Birdsall’s Ice Cream, where you may enjoy a tasty treat.  A North Iowa institution, Birdsall’s has been serving homemade ice cream, malts, shakes, banana splits, hot fudge sundaes and happy memories since 1931.

Fee $79 (fee includes everything except the visit to Birdsall’s, so please bring a few dollars, if you are interested in purchasing a treat.)
