Facilities Taskforce Updates and Progress

We are forming a community-based Facilities Taskforce to evaluate our space needs and recommend potential solutions, including the possibility of a future building project. Community input is essential for shaping a proposal that reflects shared goals and could earn voter approval. Together, we’ll collaborate to identify the best path forward.

Facilities Task Force Meeting #2 - February 19

The United South Central Schools Facilities Taskforce convened for a second time on Wednesday, February 19, to assess the district’s current strengths and weaknesses and to explore a range of potential facility solutions. Key concerns discussed include overcrowding, insufficient parking, limited lunchroom and gym space, and inefficiencies in student and staff movement. Community-related challenges, such as an aging population and financial constraints, were also discussed, alongside school-specific limitations related to scheduling, course offerings, and indoor activity space. The task force acknowledged that economic and political uncertainty, along with the rising cost of waiting, are important factors in determining the best course forward. At the same time, the district benefits from a well-designed, modern facility, a strong sense of community support, and a dedicated staff that provides diverse educational opportunities.

The task force brainstormed a spectrum of possible solutions, ranging from maintaining the current facility to various expansion options. Lower-cost ideas included utilizing off-site spaces or relocating district offices to free up classroom space. More significant proposals involved small to large-scale expansions, with options ranging from six to ten additional classrooms and new gym spaces to constructing a separate facility for PreK/child care and community programs. Each proposal was described in terms of feasibility, cost, and impact, with larger expansions requiring a referendum vote. As the process continues, the task force will analyze each of these options in-depth to determine the solution with the best overall fit for addressing the district’s long-term needs to bring as a recommendation for our school board to consider.
